On foursquare, cheating, and claiming mayorships from your couch…

Hey all -

Some of you may have noticed that we rolled out the first version of our “cheater code” – an attempt to catch some of the folks that are checking in from their couches to steal mayorships.  Since last summer, this has been one of our most requested features and has been one of the trickiest to get just right.

What we’d like to do is award points, mayorships and badges only when you’re at the place you say you’re at.  Last week we started using a few different tricks using your phone’s GPS to try to verify this.  (and if your phone doesn’t use GPS, we use a few different tricks)

Now, we’re never going to NOT let you check-in – you can checkin wherever you want, whenever you want – the idea is simply to not award points, mayorships, badges or venue specials if it looks like you didn’t really earn them.

And so far it seems like it’s working pretty well.  We are seeing some issues where people should be getting points / badges / mayors but they’re not.  This could be because the GPS location your phone gave us was slightly off or because the address / pushpin where we located the venue wasn’t quite right. We’ve been keeping an eye on these problems and we’re fine-tuning the rules, so please bear with us as we keep tweaking things to get it just right.

In the meantime, if there are certain places that are consistently giving you a problem, tell us about them and we’ll make sure to look into it:  http://4sq.com/4sqGeoWoes

Again, thanks for your patience as we work to figure this out.  You’ve been asking for it, we’ve been listening and it’s a tricky problem to fix… but we’re getting there.  :)

- team foursquare

ps:  Also worth noting that we’re fine with pre-checkins and post-checkins… you know, the checkins you send *before* you’re at a place (“I’ll be there in 10 mins!”) and the checkins you send us *after* you leave when you realize you forgot to check-in while you were there.  (Trust us, we do it too to fill out our history pages!)  The only difference now is that to unlock foursquare rewards – mayors, points, badges, etc – those checkins needs to be sent from that place.  Cool?

There’s a guy in my area that has supposedly gone to the VMAs, World Cup, and he just saw the Conan Blimp 3000 miles away yesterday while checking in to the In-N-Out down the street last night. How can we flag cheaters? I’m surprised he hasn’t checked into the North Pole yet. Here’s his account -> http://foursquare.com/user/jnam

  • http://twitter.com/TheEclectic Steve Mas

Hey can someone check on http://foursquare.com/jnam – I’m a SU2 and this guy has been grabbing badges and mayorships in areas all across the country. Definitely gaming the system.

  • Anonymous

    yup, on it. thanks

  • BigDaddyG

I dig….I got this guy Vicken B. who says he is the mayor of my business but has NEVER been here EVER…he is also the mayor of the liquor store, the thai restaurant next door, the teachers union, the crosswalk, the apartments across the street, the back alley…

I’m all for getting the word out, but I think I would prefer if the people who claim my business as their ‘domain’ actually utilized my business…

  • Anonymous

we actually have a tool that allows venue managers to oust mayors who are not actually frequenting their business. you can see this on the venue page.

  • Viequense

Well my old fashioned phone often wont let me check in via txt message, especially if there are a few places with similar names. So If it wont, I will check in later from home. Im not cheating.

  • http://twitter.com/miamalik84 Mrs. Foster

I think this is still a problem. I live in Indonesia and I’ve noticed that people without US voting rights were unlocking the iVoted badge (even if they DID have voting rights they’d do their voting by mail anyway) and some are unlocking the Ski Bum badges as we speak (and just so you know, there are no indoor ski venues in Jakarta). I just think it’s really unfair!

I personally like to check-in AFTER to avoid stalkers. But letting people get badges they’re not even eligible for? Really not cool. :(

  • http://www.mashtup.me thomasbarrell

It’s not really triangulation. You can only be connected to one cell at a time – you’d need 3 for triangulation to work.

  • Antonio

i check in my foursquare but it is not appearing on my facebook…does anybody know a solution to this?

  • http://blog.foursquare.com foursquare

yup. unlink your accounts at foursquare.com/settings, then log out of facebook, log back into facebook, then reconnect your accounts at foursquare.com/settings

This is SO frustrating! I know of a local guy who cheats. He stole the mayorship from my home gym, which completely freaked me out. He even admitted to doing drive-by check-ins in a tip at my home gym. I know that many of his mayorships are drive-by’s. I think a venue owner should be able to ban someone like that from checking in at their venue. I personally think this jerk should be banned from foursquare, but that’s a whole other issue. People like him ruin it for everyone!!

  • http://blog.foursquare.com foursquare

feel free to send us reports of people misusing foursquare and we’ll take care of it!

  • Greyeyes1967

I did send you a report, and someone contacted me, but all they did was delete his tips. He is still checking in at my house and stole the mayorship again today. I’m so tired of this. Maybe I should just switch to facebook places and be done with it.

  • http://twitter.com/BoydNeil Boyd Neil

This would be fine if foursquare was always accurate about one’s location. Today I am in Vancouver and foursquare has identified me as being in Burnaby . . . a few kilometres away.

  • foad999
  • Lana

Okay the GPS on my phone is hardly accurate half the time. I’m really sick of Foursquare giving me points and then finding out the next day that they have been deducted for no reason. It’s highly irritating and unfair.

  • Lee_Gordon

I have now been denied mayorship at three separate locations that had no mayor, and where no one had even checked in before.  Before checking in, it said there’s no mayor here, and that it could be me.  Then I check in, and it says I’m one day away from being mayor.

I’m repeatedly being told I’m only one day away from being mayor, then no matter how many times I check in there, it just keeps putting it off for one more day.  Other people in my area who are the mayors in these locations, aren’t even checking in there, yet they remain mayor, and it keeps telling me I’m just one day away.On other occasions, I’ve been inside buildings and it doesn’t even show up in my places. Then I go three miles away from there and it shows up.  So I try to log in and it tells me I’m too far away. I’m getting fed up with this.

  • http://twitter.com/Lee_Gordon Lee Gordon

That happened to me too.  In three separate locations, I was the ONLY person who ever checked in there.  Before checking in, it said there was no mayor, and that it could be me.  Then I check in and invariably it says “you’re only 1 day away from being Mayor”.

Also, there are locations where I check in repeatedly and it just keeps telling me I’m one day away every day, even though the mayors aren’t even checking in there.

  • http://twitter.com/Lee_Gordon Lee Gordon

“Drive-by” check-ins?  Stealing your mayor-ships? This is hilarious.

  • http://twitter.com/Lee_Gordon Lee Gordon

I’ve been doing some specific checking, and I’m finding that sometimes Foursquare push-pins are located out in the middle of parking lots.  The one for the place where I work is in the middle of the street!  If you wanted to check-in there, you’d _have_ to do a drive-by check-in.

  • http://twitter.com/Lee_Gordon Lee Gordon

I just realized that in order to find their push-pin, you have to select the bottom link “maps & more”, before you “check-in”.  It then shows you where you are in relation to their marker, and you can move around accordingly.  Problem is, sometimes the push-in is out in the middle of the street, or in some random location in the parking lot of a business!

I don’t haves smart phone just a iPad with wifi so I check In after I go to a place. Since I cannot Maintane a constant connection to wifi and some p
Aces just don’t have it. This seems unfair to people in my position who use foursquare honestly but aren’t lucky enough to have a $300 smart phone and a $200 plan in these times (bought the iPad off my friend for $100.)

  • Madz

I’ve had a lot of problems getting points when I have checked into places while on vacation in Wyoming and south Dakota, I.e. Yellowstone, grand Tetons, etc. Some of the places I don’t get cell service and my gps doesn’t work well so I try checking in after I leave but then I don’t get any points.

Even with certain business establishments, I’m right outside or inside the building and it says I’m too far away to get points. It stinks because my cell phone service is poor and a lot of times I have to wait to check in until after I leave (get outside) or find a place where I get service.

Sometimes if it says I’m too far away to get points, I’ll try again in a little bit to see if it will give me points but then it says I was already there that day. Is there a way you can fix this? It’s really frustrating when you are at a place but cant get any points.

I have an android desire phone, could that be part of the problem?

  • Madz

Oh yes, I also am getting frustrated where day after day it tells me “you’re only 1 day away from becoming mayor” and there is no mayor. And no one has checked in there before.

  • anticheating

here is a user that should be banned for obvious cheating…2568145

  • K Andez

I agree cheaters are a**holes and all that good stuff, but damn it, this is annoying. I’m AT the place, not 20m or 651m nor even 5m from the place and it goes whoa that’s a lot of checkins! Damn right, I’m on a train!! That’s what happens when you’re on a train, you get there fast! The app should be a little smarter in distinguishing that! This is effin annoying and might be the reason I delete it.

  • Dcook70

what I am concerned about is someone who can check in to 3 dfferent restautant w/in 5 minutes… that tells me they are walking by but not going in!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Kittinger/100000070732473 Eric Kittinger

I don’t mind the anti-cheat software, but when Foursquare itself tells me I am 63 feet from the venue pin how can I be too far away?

  • Jenaeac

I’m having a problem where I go to bed and wake up and check in and it tells me woah that’s a lot of check ins. It’s been 6-8 hours!!! Please fix this!!!

https://foursquare.com/renls (Renee L.)This cheater has really been getting to me, she has been checking into places when they are closed and taking my mayorships.I used to live near to a bar that i would frequently go to, like every night. they play great music and my friend worked there, so i would go and chill with her when it’s slow during the late afternoon / early evening. The first time she ousted me as mayor of this bar, it was a MONDAY.. they are NOT OPENED to the public on monday’s. sometimes they are opened, but only to restock etc. i asked my friend who was there if she knew her that day or if anyone knew her, they all said no. After when i regained my mayorship, she ousted me again, on a friday. When she ousted me I was at the bar for about 2 hours hanging with my friend, but forgot to check in. All of a sudden, i got a notification saying that i was ousted. They all said that she was not there at all for the day.An hour ago, at the supermarket, when i checked in, i saw a notification that i was ousted as mayor of the mall where i frequently go to. but the time in which she checked in to oust me clearly stated that she cheated. the mall does not open til after 10am. this is when i saw the notification, and it said that she ousted me 3 hours ago. im like really? no way she’s at the mall at 7am. i even took a screen shot to show. Alot of my friend have also noticed the same thing with her.  What can be done about this?

  • http://about.me/cblack Carl Black

Unfortunately, 4Sq doesn’t seem to do anything about fake-ins anymore. They used to reset all mayorships when someone was obviously doing this, but you’re not likely to get a response from them at all these days. They’re focused on other areas.

  • Jayarinca

I live in CA and my friend lives in NYC. I check in to his apartment from my house (3000 miles away) just for fun to let him know I am thinking about him… we are both foursquare addicts.  Is this a problem?

  • Phthoruth

    Re pre/post checkins.
It would be cool if you could checkin when theres no wifi/3G available.  GPS usually works, so maybe do a checkin but later followup with where you actually meant.

  • Jasmine

no wonder alot of stuff was getting deleted.

what about people who drive by a location on a daily basis and check in. they dont actually go there, they are just near it at a stop light…seems kinda cheap…

  • Anonymous

Unfortunately this doesn’t stop people walking past a venue and checking in that way :( can superusers ban users?

  • joseph young

This could be because the GPS location your phone gave us was
slightly off or because the address / pushpin where we located the venue
    wasn’t quite right.

    This sucks.
Look, I understand that you want to deter cheaters, but I think it is more harmful than helpful. Just today, I’ve gotten two ‘cheater’ messages when trying to check in, because it was listing me as being 8-10 miles away from where I was standing.

I could click the icon to show me local venues, and it would show me that I was standing where I was, but checking in said otherwise.

  • DeQuan G.

Definitely a good idea about having the cheater codein place, but whatever is going on is messing with my points. I am getting only “1″ point for ALL check-ins, including New Check-ins. This has been especially happenning over the course of the last two to three weeks.

I’m being patient, but I would definitely appreciate it when you all get situatedto award those who have been shorted their points, with their points.
    Thanks!

so what do you guys do about drive-by checkins?

for example, this guy (https://foursquare.com/soreal) seems to be checking into everything in sight. from synagogues to gas stations and office buildings (you can actually track his progress along the road on twitter!). stole my mayorship at the office in the middle of the night (the office is closed, obviously)

What you need to do is fix drive by check in. I lost 3 Mayorships yesterday to the same person between 7-7:15 am. The places weren’t even open.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Fath/100000692015968 Shawn Fath

Not to mention same user is Mayor of a private business that you can only go into by making an appointment. Also a VFW where you need to be a member. i report this person more than once Foursquare does nothing about it.
