Am I mayor yet?

We made a quick yet long-awaited tweak to our apps today. When you’re getting close to winning a Mayorship (within 10 check-ins), you’ll now see how far away you are from ousting the current Mayor. You’ll see the count in the post check-in screen when you check into a place. Take it for a test drive tonight and see if it fires up the flames of competitiveness for you!

Just a quick reminder of how Mayorships work: To become Mayor of a place, you need to have checked in more days than anyone else over the last two months (60 days), so only one check-in per day counts. Oh, you also need to have uploaded a profile photo from your settings page (no one wants a faceless dictatorship!). And yes, we also made changes that prevent registered “Managers” and “Employees” from becoming Mayors of their own venues.

We have lots and lots in the queue, so you’ll be hearing more from us shortly!

Thank you! I love how you are doing this and it gets me so excited to take over Mayorship. Foursquare badges are such a competitive thing for me so now I just have one more thing to motivate me!

I like this new feature, though I’d love to see it balanced by a warning to mayors who are about to be ousted, so they can be prompted to get back in the habit of visiting.More important, though, would be fixes to Foursquare’s algorithms so cheaters can’t steal mayorships when they’re nowhere near a venue. The guy who stole one of my mayorships in New York last week also earned a badge in California a few hours earlier. (Apparently, he’s in Java, not even in the U.S.) Something’s wrong when Foursquare lets people get away with that and ignores requests to address the issue.

You’ll see this when you’re within 10 days of becoming a mayor!

All kinds of nice enhancements BUT what happened to the check-ins ? Some places you’re standing right there… pull up the app… refresh refresh just to make sure the phone knows where you are… pull up places… ok… it’s right there on top… check-in… I’m sorry you’re too far away… Grrrr ! And from I hear… mobile check-ins don’t count anymore either!

I’ve noticed once you lose a mayorship, you cannot win it back. Why? Not cool!

I stop into a place every night for a drink, I was mayor for several months, and then I lost it to a FS friend, who didn’t check in nearly as much as I did, when I checked in the next day, I had lost my consecutive check in bonus, and I am not even close to regaining it, more than 10 days out, I don’t understand how I could lose a place that I checked into 52 times in the past two months, and not be close to claiming it back.

This can’t be the way it works. I have caught a mayor who was more then 10 days ahead of me just by checking in earlier then him. When I became mayor, i was ousted two days later and became two days away from mayorship. I had become mayor again, then today after I had already checked in, i lost the mayorship when the competitor checked in for the second time in one day. I have no idea on how foursquare really works. It makes no sense.

I’m confused about how this works — I was mayor of a place, which to date has a total of 187 checkins by 15 people.  I have checked in 115 times, yet was ousted  by someone else.  Mathematically impossible for the other person to overthrow me.  How can this happen?

I was wondering how i got ousted from mayorship of a place when I was logging in everyday and I have more than 100 plus check-ins on this venue and he only has around 30.  Makes me want to drop foursquare
