Faster check-ins on iPhone. Much, much faster.

Yesterday, we hit a pretty big milestone (10,000,000 people on foursquare!). Today, to celebrate, we released foursquare 3.2 for the iPhone. Faster check-ins (with a big new ‘Check In’ button), an improved Explore tab that helps you find Specials, and a ton of other improvements.

For those of you in a rush, the faster check-ins will really save you time. Tap ‘Check In,’ and the list of nearby places should load much much faster. We’ve been testing it internally for a bit, and everyone has been loving it.

We did a bit of pruning, too: with this release, we’re retiring the stand-alone shout button. Since foursquare is ultimately location-based, we decided that shouts should always be attached to a check-in. From now on, if you want to shout, just enter your text when you’re checking in someplace (millions of you do, every day). Though a bunch of us here at HQ were also bummed about the loss, we found it lays the groundwork for better things in the future.

Enjoy 3.2. Android and BlackBerry, we’ve got updates coming your way soon. Stay tuned!

Does this mean GPS will load faster. I have to hit refresh 3 to 5 times before it clicks in. Other apps don’t take that long to snap up the GPS.

Their is a ux problem.  After I check in to a place the only button available action is “Explore”. I want the “Back” button to come back. Here is how I use it. I search for my work location, the building comes up and my company as well. I check in to the building and then I would hit back then click my company and check in.

Now I have to search for my company, check in, hit “explore”, repeat search for company, check in.

So you wanted to speed up check in but now it is much more of a hassle for me, it also takes more time. Please fix asap.

using crosspost for a while and it works great when on gowalla is a similar venue like on foursquare. If there’s no venue there will be no checkin on gowalla.

Let’s see how we handle this on Android, since there’s a hardware back-button. I also used to do it like that when I want to check in more than 1 venue

  • Anonymous

I would recommend just switching from one tab (ie friends tab) to another (ie places tab), wait for satellite (GPS) icon to stop blinking, and then clicking refresh for nearby venues… should work every time!

  • Anonymous

Any chance we can get the 24hr check-in cap raised from 30 now? I sometimes have to use my standalone shouts to tell people where I am on a busy day while waiting to get out of timeout (so to speak… or to ensure I do not go into timeout)!

  • http://twitter.com/deabruzo Dennis

Sounds the same as tapping refresh three times. Just different buttons.

  • Anonymous

Also, what about the feature on the mobile site? What about third-party apps that have access to shouts like @Soundtracking, @HootSuite, and @TweetDeck?

  • http://about.me/SpamSpam Spam

Getting a GPS lock faster, as far as I know, is out of foursquare’s control. A better idea would be to allow an option in the app that would wait for a GPS lock before requesting a list of nearby places from foursquare.

  • Anonymous

I recommend that you unlink and then relink your Facebook account… that should resolve any issues!

  • Anonymous

well, it depends on if you get the indicator to activate upon hitting the refresh or not… my Android does not always do that, but switching tabs always works… once it is engaged, I just wait for the blinking to stop and then refresh the venue list!

  • http://about.me/SpamSpam Spam

Refreshing works just as well. The app doesn’t have control over how long it takes to get a lock–that’s up to the device–so it’s just a matter of refreshing the list of places once the lock happens (either by using “Refresh” in the menu, as Dennis and I do, or switching back and forth between tabs as you do).

I just tested this out on my iPhone 4 and WOW!!!  Check-ins are much, much faster, just as promised.  I like this a lot!!
    Great job guys.

ummm.  it doesn’t work.  I haven’t been able to checkin since downloading the updated iPhone app.

  • Chris Corke

Hey Guys (and Girls), great work. Am loving seeing this app devlop.

One thing I am having trouble with though; I am running v3.2 on my iPhone – all good. However, when I click checkin, I get a list of nearby places – all good. When I select one and check in there, it gives me the usual info i.e OK! we’ve got you………… You are 5 days away from….. etc etc. The problem I have is that there is no way to navigate back to the list of other nearby places or view any other features of FS.

Seems like a bug to me but wanted to get your input.
    Thanks
    Chris

Hopefully, a BlackBerry update is coming. The GPS hasn’t been working since 1.9.0.85 on the Torch! As a location based app, this should be the first thing working… I’m always between 2 miles away (in cities) and 20 miles away (in rural areas) from where I stand, so sometimes too far away to check in…
