Keep up with the conversation. It’s a new notification tray!

At foursquare, we often talk of going ‘beyond the check-in.’ There are so many interesting things that are happening out in the world that you want to keep up on, like when you and a buddy both have the same place on your To-Do Lists (serendipity!), or when a friend comments on your check-in. Today, we’re rolling out an easy way to keep track of all those things: our new notification tray.

People in the Android-iverse, you’re first to play with this; download today’s update to get started. For the rest of you, head over to foursquare.com to see what it’s all about (just click on ‘notifications’).

Even if you’re not checking in, the new notification tray is a great reason to open the app or visit foursquare.com. It helps you keep up on everything. It keeps you posted when things happen, including:

  • a friend comments on one of your check-ins;
  • there are new comments or photos on a check-in you’ve commented on;
  • your friend does one of the Tips you’ve left;
  • you and a friend both have the same place on your To-Do List;
  • a place you’re at starts swarming;
  • one of your Facebook friends joins foursquare; and,
  • you’re ousted as Mayor (boo!).

Now, in one organized place, you can see more of what’s going on in your friends’ lives.

We also added some more controls over these notifications. On your Android phone, just go to your settings and you can flip on and off any one you want, and the same is true of settings on the web. We’re also introducing a new mute button, so you can turn off notifications for an hour, or until the next morning.

In our testing, we found the notification tray made our foursquare experience feel a ton more connected. We hope you like it, too!

P.S. iPhone and BlackBerry users, we’re working to get the notification tray to you as quick as possible, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the new notification tray on foursquare.com.

    In case you people asking about the Shout feature don’t keep up with all the 4sq news, Shout is going away…

    “We did a bit of pruning, too: with this release, we’re retiring the stand-alone shout button. Since foursquare is ultimately location-based, we decided that shouts should always be attached to a check-in. From now on, if you want to shout, just enter your text when you’re checking in someplace (millions of you do, every day). Though a bunch of us here at HQ were also bummed about the loss, we found it lays the groundwork for better things in the future.”

    That’s great and all, but what about those of us stuck on Android 1.5? With the deprecation of the v1 API (used by “foursquared”, which is the only Foursquare app that runs on 1.5, but has long been abandoned), we’ll have no way to continue using Foursquare.

    Everything looks great but I’m disappointed that u removed the sound notification where I could choose what sound I wanted. It was more personalized before. I didn’t have to look at my phone, when I heard the sound I set for 4square I knew it was 4square. Now it’s just whatever I set my notification sound to it plays and I have to look at the phone because most apps just use whatever your basic notification sound is set to. Not only that but only “SOME” foursquare notifications alert me by sound. What is the purpose of picking and choosing which things u want to be alerted by within 4square if only “SOME” alerts u by sound and “SOME” are silent. Just doesn’t make any sense to me.

You may have it set to find your position based on the cell phone provider towers instead of true GPS satellites, therefore putting your location farther away from your actual location. I used to have that problem too. But searching for the place always helps bring it to the top. and will hinder the duplicates if ppl learn to use the SEARCH button.

    I’m with everyone else on the “Why Fix Something That is not Broke?” train. While the new tray looks cool, it’s not necessary. Not when I have a notification tray on my screen already. And now I have no notification sound. I don’t get it–this is an improvement? Take away sound notifications, and use more of my screen real estate? I don’t care about having them all in one place. I care about being able to hear them. And now I can’t. And without sound, what’s the point?

    Hooray! This definitely makes the service a more social and richer experience – love the way it enhances the functionality of Tips. Well done.

    A few responses:

    Shout was an intrusive feature that no one but the hardcore narcissists liked. Good riddance. :o )

    Requests to merge duplicates and to delete inappropriate venues constitute a huge backlog, this is why it often takes ages; be patient. If something is urgent, a faster way is to visit the Get Satisfaction forums, where volunteer users action requests.

    PS: DO NOT, DO NOT add requests for venue changes as Tips. -_-

    My gps works fine on my Optimus 2x :-)
    its just that some people add a venue with there phone… on the wrong place (without them knowing) and you cant place the venue’s marker where it should be. Like you can edit it yourself when you add a venue on the computer.. of course some people could abuse that sort of option if it would exist. and there is no admin who knows the world like his pocket te check if every venue exists etc etc.. so ^^ problem

    Your app is now not allowing check ins when a person is inside a building or directly at a spot, and the gps/satellite settings are set. When will this be FIXED! I check in often, so I’m not able to benefit from the activities (leadership in points, badges, etc.)

    I really do love this update! Minus the fact that it no longer brings up my favorites and trending on top. I have to completely search for them, even if their closer than the ones in the list… I see that becoming a problem…. :-/

    My notification ringtone does not play anymore. And NO, I have not muted it or silenced it with the new feature. I don’t even see where I can go to change my notification ringtone, there used to be one, but now I don’t see it, and when someone checks in, now I dont hear it.     Hopefully Jeff Wilcox of 4th and Mayor will take care of us until foursquare gets there. This feature actually knocked his app offline temporarily so he certainly knows it’s here now!

    I updated 4square on my Google G1 and since then it continually force closes on me when I try to log in. Not sure what is up with that, but it’s annoying as I use 4square a lot!

    Thanks for the latest update, and I really love it so much, but there’s one issue about the foursquare where it’s an error, it happened when I check-in a venue but it doesn’t update in the friend list, it just showed my previous check-in and not the current and latest ones, is there anything wrong wif the app? hope u can do something about it.     Thats exactly why i rolled back my FS to ver. 2011.06.09. I have part of a Rihanna song assigned to my FS alerts(friends’ checkins and such). I say if it aint broke, please dont fix it! Well they broke it! Updating an app isnt suppose to be about REMOVING funtionality that WORKS and what people enjoy.

    From the Superuser guidelines: “If you come across venues that doesn’t follow our guidelines (desks, beds, cars, stadium seats, TV shows, etc.) or venues for places that don’t exist (remember that many new users don’t realize that they can shout rather than check in, which is why they may add venues like “Happytime USA”, “I hate my boss”, or “On the beach”), you can flag them for deletion but please leave them open.”

    While I almost never used Shout myself, I worry that removing the feature might lead to even more of these nuisance venues that we will have to clean up.
    My biggest issue with the latest update is lack of the My Favorites section. Even though it didn’t always work (some venues stubbornly refused to show up there) it was generally very useful and made it super easy to find the places I check in to most often.Some things I’d like to see added: =access to Superuser tools in the apps.=a way to bookmark venues to refer to later

    Notification Tray is ok, what I’m not happy with is the way the points keep being subtracted EVERY DAY!!!! There’s no chance to even catch up with one self. I liked the old way three points were re-tallied on Sunday night. It gave you a chance to compete with yourself.

    I was very happy with foursquare, but I am pretty aggravated that several times I did not get points for places that I was at or in because it says my phone thinks I’m too far, when I’m sitting in the building or parking lot.
