Want to get $25 for spending $25? Of course you do!

For those of you who will be a bit too overwhelmed (or sleepy) for the post-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza that is Black Friday – or for those of you who just can’t get enough – there’s another huge event just one day after: Small Business Saturday. The 2nd annual Small Business Saturday, presented by American Express, is a day dedicated to supporting local businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

On Saturday, November 26, spend $25 at one of hundreds of thousands of local merchants across the US, and you’ll get $25. For free. Seriously.

How to support your local businesses and make 25 bucks while you’re at it!

  1. Before Thanksgiving, sync your foursquare account to your American Express ® Card at sync.americanexpress.com/foursquare.
  2. On Saturday, check into any of the hundreds of thousands of participating merchants across the country. (Once you’ve synced your card to your foursquare accounts, foursquare will show you all the nearby Amex Specials in the ‘Explore’ tab on your phone.)
  3. After you check in, you’ll see a button that says “load to card.” Tap it!
  4. Spend $25 or more with your Amex card and you’re done! No need to show your phone to a cashier or anything.

Shortly after your payment, you’ll receive a notification that you just got at $25 Amex account credit, which will appear on your Amex statement around 5 business days later.

There are a ton of small businesses participating, which means that wherever you are, you’ll be able to find a great local merchant to support (and get $25 bucks, too!).

To find participating businesses in your area, on that Saturday, pull up the ‘Explore’ tab on your phone and tap on ‘Specials.’ Even better, that morning check out the brand new foursquare.com homepage and use the nifty map up top to look for Specials (colored orange). You can zoom the map out or drag it to any location to see more deals. We’ll have more details next week!

Don’t have the foursquare app? Download it here! And sync your accounts now!

I think it would be helpful to be able to pre-load the specials before November 25.  I think foursquare’s resources are going to get hammered if everyone is trying to “EXPLORE” and download at the same time.

I actually think you need to spend more time helping businesses claim their venues so they can really begin to engage and reward their customers and show their value in the community.

The business claim process is not working and many venues find it cumbersome and time consuming and I have to agree.

Once set up, it works like a champ until you want to modify the special;  you can’t you have to retire it, try to explain that to a venue owner.

As a consumer, I love the product and have so much fun keeping up with friends, family, receiving badges, etc.  However, as a consultant who helps small business with social engagement and marketing campaigns, it’s a killer and not in a good way.  Like to see how we can turn this around.  Thanks, Doreen

I’d like to see participating businesses *before* I sign on, not after. I live in a small city (pop. 8,400) that’s the biggest town in a 5 county area of northern WI. Its common that big promos like this are mostly geared toward major metro areas & local businesses here either don’t participate or don’t even know about the promo. Thus, I don’t want to waste time registering, downloading app, etc. only to find that the nearest participating business is a 1 hour drive away & sells something I don’t want. This is why I’m not going to participate in the offer. But I will support small businessess here.

I think this is a great start. It’s too bad that not many people carry AMEX. I’m looking forward to see what else Foursquare does in the near future. :)

A little pissed off – I was all set to make a purchase yesterday, when another customer and the sales person told me if I waited until Saturday I could get the $25 credit. I explained that you needed an AMex card which I don’t have or desire.  They assured me I didn’t need one. “Just go on line and register!” Sooo, put back my purchases & now I have to make a special trip cross town to re-buy what I could’ve bought yesterday. Gas, time is precious. Should’ve listened to MYSELF!

Cool thanks foursquare and American Express

Your new interactive map to participating small businesses is not on “new” homepage as promised. #fail

  • alicia

Had an extremely frustrating experience today trying to use the Amex special at Tabata Noodle in New York for Small Business Saturday. I ordered the usual and upon trying to pay, they declined my Amex and said that they only accept Mastercard / Visa, despite having the Amex special on their location page (see attached image). I even spoke to the owner / manager, and from what I could understand (her English wasn’t great), they had never even heard of Foursquare and had no idea they were offering an Amex special.

How is it possible that this special appeared on this business’ page without the consent of the restaurant’s manager?

All in all, an extremely frustrating and upsetting experience.

  • Mary S

Does anyone know if I just sync’d my card, and it is AFTER Thanksgiving, if I might still get the credit?

  • Brian R

the map of local businesses is severely lacking. I know the program is new so I hope in future years the map is improved alot.

    So awesome!

  • Eddie

how do i add my small business to this?

  • Rod Falanga

The way I read it, the answer to your question is no.  Which is what bothers me a lot, because when I first went to this website to see what this whole “Small Business Saturday” was all about a couple of days ago, it said that I should return here on Saturday, to see what the deals are, etc.  So, I went away from this website and didn’t return until today.  Now, I read that you had to sync you Foursquare account with your American Express card before Thanksgiving?!  Then why in heck did they use the terminology they did, which lead me to believe that I had to leave this website until today???  Real poor, Foursquare.  If you, or American Express, doesn’t want to give the $25 to users for supporting local businesses, then please don’t bother with this sort of “promotion”.  Frankly, I feel really duped, and I resent it.

  • Dstrouth

This isn’t the fault of AMEX or foursquare, but the clerk who probably wasn’t completely aware of how it worked as well.

  • http://twitter.com/adamparish Adam Parish

This offer worked great for me and it resulted in me using my Amex which I normally *don’t* use.  Good work Foursquare and Amex!

  • http://twitter.com/TclothsSporks TableclothsAndSporks

Hmm, I synched my card today, and the specials were unlocked in my iPhone, but I didn’t receive notification that I got the credits. I am reading this post now, and it says that I should have done it before Thanksgiving. Wait, what??
Then, why on Earth did it let me sync my card today and redeem the specials TODAY during my check-ins?
I am calling Amex and Foursquare. It should not have shown me the specials, OR let me unlock them OR told me they were “loaded to my card” if it was not going to work.

Again, I got a message on my phone that the special was available to me today and that the credit WAS loaded to my account. Bad, bad user interface and misleading customers. I am disappointed as I am a heavy Foursquare user and Amex customer since 1996.

  • http://twitter.com/TclothsSporks TableclothsAndSporks

More details: I am extremely upset at this situation and WILL follow up with
Amex and 4square. I synched my card on the mobile website (on-the-go
while at a store) and there was nothing there saying that it had to be
done BEFORE Saturday. When I checked in, the special was unlocked
(again, nothing said that I had to do it BEFORE Saturday) and I tapped
to redeem it and again, nothing that said that it had to be done ahead
of time. Now, I get home, get ready to share my experience and lo and
behold, I see the disclaimer after the fact. We visited many places on the premise that it was a great campaign and now we are out at least $75. Ugh.

  • http://twitter.com/TclothsSporks TableclothsAndSporks

Also, the wording is misleading. I was under the impression you could use it for multiple places:
“There are a ton of small businesses participating, which means
that wherever you are, you’ll be able to find a great local merchant to
support (and get $25 bucks, too!).”
But that seems to contradict this statement:
“On Saturday, November 26, spend $25 at one of hundreds of thousands of
local merchants across the US, and you’ll get $25. For free. Seriously.”

So could you use it one time during the whole day, or could you use it “wherever you are”? (different businesses, different cities in the same state).
AGAIN, there were NO details after I used the first credit telling me I couldn’t unlock another credit, it just let me and showed me the screens saying that it was “loaded to my card”, so I continued using it. We made at least 5 purchases based on this discount. Again, in the “Check-in Special” screen there was nothing that said: you already used it today, you cannot use it again, you greedy person”.

  • http://twitter.com/TclothsSporks TableclothsAndSporks

See? Even though I had unlocked and used an special at MagiQuest, it let me unlock and use (“load”) another one. Nowhere it says that it’s one $25 for the whole day, and I was able to unlock in this manner 2 times and my husband 3 times. So now instead of being happy with our purchases and fun day splurging and helping the economy, we are saddled with an extra $75 balance that will wreck this month’s budget :-(

I’d love to find out what you find out from either AmEx, or Foursquare.

  • cmorsi

I found out about this deal too late! :( But I love the idea of it.

  • KjS

People should have been able to benefit in Small Business Saturday regardless of having an AMEX card.

  • Jep25k

Do people not understand the point of a promotion? Believe it or not, it’s not to reward customers but to attract new ones. If u don’t have an Am/Ex quit whining and find another deal that u r eligible for.

  • Anonymous

I tried to sign up on Friday but wasn’t able to.  This is really frustrating bec I would have participated in this promo.

  • Tony

I saw the special on Saturday night, synched my AMEX, then went back to redeem the special but never saw it again. I think I inadvertently clicked on a “hide AMEX specials” link during the process, but I couldn’t find a way to reverse that. It was appearing on my friends account/app, but she didn’t have an AMEX card. After 20 minutes of frustration trying to get this to work in the restaurant I was in, I gave up and used another credit card. I also unsynched the AMEX card.

Your 10$ American Express offer for VBar in NYC is invalid,  I lost out on 10$ because of it. They don’t take AE. Please fix.
