It concerns me that Foursquare is encouraging checking in to venues while driving. It is dangerous and illegal in many states. Stay safe this Holiday Season, don’t text and drive!

would be cool to see some outside the states too. *hint*

Cool stuff. I know a lot of people are driving and wonder if this is skewed at all towards my sentiment that checking in on a highway, in a traffic jam or at an On/Off Ramp is cheap and shouldn’t count as a check in

  • http://robert.aitchison.org raitchison

It’s interesting and all but it’s pretty flawed from an informational standpoint.

    1. I would expect (and hope) that most 4SQ users don’t checkin on highways or roads, ignoring the whole don’t checkin while driving thing (meaning only passengers could legeitmately check in) it’s really a rather lame thing to do in most cases (except for specific unique roads that are legit venues such as Lombard Street in San Francisco (http://4sq.com/tkW0IH)).

    2. Anyone traveling long distances by train is going to see their checkins at different days, unless they are checking in at every stop the train makes (also rather lame)

  • Nadine M Hughes

Most likely this is skewed to make it seem that NYC and the Tri-state area has the most movement, possibly implying that residents here travel the furthest for the Holidays, when realistically there are probably more users of Foursquare in this are than any other. Either that or Im buying shares in Metro North/AmTrack!!!!!!

Cool. Both inspiring and thought provoking. An image of smartphone-equipped, mind-machine-integrated Sky People leapfrogging the unevolved Rock Dwellers in the great #offgrid heart of darkness? How long since we’ve ventured into those hostile regions beyond the high bandwidth cyborg safety of 4G corridors?

It’s a completely different world out there, beyond our fancy filter bubbles and tech corridors. Just can’t help but think about the quality of life of http://j.mp/ThoseOtherPeople who don’t live like I do, during this lovely season too often beset by limp-willed lip-service and begrudged obligation. I’m not pessimistic! Far from it. We _can_ do better, if we courageously face the challenges set before us. #MicCheck! ”We are allowed to speak about alternatives.”"We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!”

Just shows how far the US has to go in terms of train travel. Both the French TGV network and the current Chinese high-speed system put the nation that brought us the ‘Iron Horse’ to shame!

  • http://robert.aitchison.org raitchison

It’s true, checking in on the highway ranks right up there with checking in on the toilet or at an ATM.  Unless the particular highway is your actual destination it’s not checkin worthy IMO.

Also don’t forget the likelihood that most people who check in on highways do so while they are driving.

Actually it was two separate sentences, you will note the period (and even two spaces) along with the capital letter at the beginning of the second sentence.
