Hello, world! City badges are coming your way!

UPDATE: Thanks for the feedback from our Turkish users! We’ve updated the Bosphorus badge imagery to Maiden’s Tower.

We have a pretty unbelievable international community on foursquare, with millions of people checking in everywhere from Japan to Brazil to Sri Lanka. After we launched the Windy City badge in Chicago, many of you requested them for your own cities across the globe.

Starting this week, we’re going to be rolling out a bunch of city badges, and we’re kicking it off with Paris, Istanbul, and London. And, to get you started, we’ve created great lists for each city to help you explore.

To come up with the places where you can unlock each city’s badge, we looked at the tens of millions of places where people have checked in, and also tapped into the collective knowledge of our amazing Superusers. We’ve got some well-known spots, some local favorites, and a lot in between.

To find out the places you need to go to be a foursquare local expert, head over to foursquare.com/4sqCities. Follow the lists, and, next time you make it to the city (or if you’re there already!), check in to five of the places to unlock your badge. Start exploring today!

And more coming soon!
Ever since the amazing responses to our first city badge, we’ve been looking at more cities to expand to, based on where people go on vacation, where the foursquare community is growing, and places our community has been asking for. We’ve got a ton more that we’re working on, so expect a steady trickle of city badges in the coming months. Want to add your city to your trophy case or have suggestions for places to go on the lists? Submit your suggestions with this form.

I’m so glad to hear this.   I’ve always been a big fan of Foursquare and the company so to be formally known as Gowalla.  I’m glad you guys are doing something similar, but better.

  • http://twitter.com/HiBerke Berke H.

I’m from Istanbul and I’M SO excited about this local badges! How amazing to see my hometown among with Paris and London. Dear Foursquare please do tell why Istanbul was your choice in the first batch. I’m curious as I can ever be! Thank you!!!

  • http://twitter.com/HiBerke Berke H.

Many of the original badges were New York based already. There was New York when there were no other cities.

  • http://twitter.com/Bookototo Bob Pluta

Are city badges for Corpus Christi in those future plans?

  • http://twitter.com/HiBerke Berke H.

I like it. Although they could’ve used the bosphorus bridge’s silhouette. It’s an architectural structure for the other two badges, but the hat is the first thing comes to mind when Turks are mentioned.

  • http://twitter.com/HiBerke Berke H.

Some don’t, some do. In any case, it’s a outdated novelty. A novelty regardless.

    Tower Bridge!

  • Onur

It’s great to see my city, Istanbul, in the first batch! If I understand correctly the first design of the badge had a fez, and was changed to the Maiden’s Tower.. I agree it’s a better choice. The top three “symbols” I could think of would be the Galata Tower, Bosphorus Bridge and the Maiden’s Tower, but the first two would probably not be recognizable enough.
Looking forward to unlocking it (soon)! :)

Naturally one of the new city badges should be for Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Foursquare’s bridgehead in Europe, home to many of the world’s finest museums, Vondelpark, Red Light disctrict, the monumental canals and Heineken. Something there for everyone! How wouldn’t want to earn a bagde as beautiful as this?
