Anywhere in the world, foursquare Explore can find you something interesting (now on your computer!)
Note: We’re in the process of rolling this out – it should be live for everyone by the end of the afternoon!
We launched Explore on your phone to help you find interesting things nearby, right now. But that was just a small step for us. The vision for foursquare is much much bigger – it’s about adding an ‘interesting’ layer to the whole world, tailored just for you. Today, we’re taking a big leap in that direction, with our web version of Explore at foursquare.com/explore.

Whether you’re planning a night out in your neighborhood or a vacation in Europe, what should you do? Which of your friends should you ask about things? How can you save money? Where can you easily find great places you’ve never been to? How do you search for personalized recommendations in the real world?
This is a huge and difficult problem. Most real-world searches are one-size fits all. You search for pizza, and it gives you the same list of pizza places, whether you like deep dish or thin crust, whether you want a slice or a sit-down meal, or whether your friends would love it or hate it.
But not with foursquare Explore, because you and your friends’ check-ins (along with the 1,500,000,000 more from the foursquare community) help us personalize our recommendations for you. Every time you check in, we get better at finding places you’ll like.
Finally, because Explore is powered by check-ins and foursquare Tips, it’s not just personalized, it’s specific. Search for ‘pool table,’ or ‘guacamole’; ‘deep dish,’ or ‘thin crust.’ Because not all bars, Mexican restaurants, or pizza joints are created equal, and we want to make sure you find what you’re craving.
So here’s your homework: take the next couple minutes and give it a spin at foursquare.com/explore (work can wait!).
- Find a place to go to lunch today that you’ve never been before (hint: look for the ‘I haven’t been to yet’ checkbox).
- Search for a nice spot to try out tomorrow night (try searching “fun,” “romantic,” or “Friday”).
- Pick a city you’ve been wanting to visit (Chicago? Paris? Rio?) and look at our personally-tailored top picks for you there, based on your check-ins from your hometown.
Pretty easy, no? It’s powered by our 1,500,000,000 check-ins, tens of millions of Tips, and over half million Lists. And the results get better and better the more you use foursquare. Play around, test it out, and let us know what you think. This is a step towards foursquare’s big idea – always connecting you to the most interesting things nearby, wherever you happen to be in the world.
P.S. Try it on your iPad. We designed it to look gorgeous on it!
